課程概述

In our course this semester we focus on understanding the basic qualities of good English paragraphs written in an academic English style. These qualities are the foundation upon which all academic writing depends in English. Without a strong understanding of these qualities and skill in writing paragraphs, any English composition will be seriously weakened.

In the second semester we will continue working on paragraphing skills as well as some of the rhetorical modes used to present ideas in academic English paragraphing. When student paragraphing skills are developed sufficiently, we will move to longer Academic English composition forms.

Because of the nature of English composition skills, we will frequently use small group work so students can express their understanding of English paragraphs to each other.

Students can expect to have (on average) one writing assignment a week.

Students will use American English in their assignments for this course.

Typical class format: In the first hour of class we will start with our textbook, discussing whatever part of the textbook we are covering. This will be followed by application exercises and peer review group sessions. Individual and small group conferencing on student work will also take place during class time. Because of the nature of English composition skills, we will frequently use small group work so students can express their understanding of English paragraphs to each other.

Students should note that the syllabus listed below is tentative and will be revised to accommodate the writing level of students enrolled in class. Be sure to check the online syllabus frequently as it may change

課程目標
(1) To develop the skills used in writing academic English paragraphs
(2) To identify each student's weakness in English grammar
(3) To understand the process approach to writing academic English paragraphs
(4) To improve each student's understanding and use of English language arts
課程要求
required textbook: "Paragraph Skills (2nd edition)" by John Langan. McGraw-Hill available at Bookman Books.

(1) Punctual class attendance. Students need to attend class in order to improve their writing skills in English. So, it only makes sense to attend every class. To encourage this practice, this course will strictly follow the university attendance policy. If you must miss a class, be sure to print out the student absence document and give it to the teacher within the time limit. (Explanation: The computer-based absence notification system used by the university does not include your English name, so it is difficult for the teacher to use it. Only hard copies (paper copies) of the absence document will be accepted. A copy of the form is available on the announcements page of this class webpage.)

(2) Participation in peer review groups. Students will be engaged in small group work during class time. Each student is expected to be well-prepared for this work and to contribute enthusiastically to it. The group effort will influence how much is learned by the group: any student not fully participating will hinder the progress of the group.

(3) Writing assignments (paragraphs). Our syllabus is designed to promote student writing skills in English. It is very important that all students keep up with the assignments. All assignments must be handed in on time; late assignments will not be accepted. If you find you are having a problem completing your assignment on time, contact the teacher as soon as possible to make arrangements for submitting an assignment late. Contact the teacher at class email address given on the course syllabus in class.

(4) Final reflective essay must be emailed by December 27, 2011
